Kenya Business Daily reported. According to data from the Kenyan central bank, compared with the same period last year, mobile transactions via mobile phones in January-May 2019 increased by 186.11 billion shillings to 1.79 trillion shillings. The average daily mobile payment transaction amounted to 11.85 billion shillings, an increase of 11.58% over the same period last year. Compared with previous years, mobile payment platforms are no longer only used for P2P transfers, and more and more are used for commercial transactions and instant short-term loans.
A survey of research institutions from African consumer observations showed that 14% of the 3,703 Kenyans surveyed preferred to use mobile payments, doubled in 2017, and 77% still prefer to use cash. This shows that Kenya is slowly and firmly moving towards a non-monetized economy.
